Awareness Session on Breast Cancer
A compelling and insightful session on breast cancer awareness was held on 28 October 2025 at the DFA Auditorium, IIHM, in collaboration with the Institute of Breast Disease, Kolkata. The event welcomed three distinguished medical experts: Dr Soumen Das, Director of the Institute of Breast Disease at NCRI Hospital; Dr Tanmoy K. Mandal, Director of Medical Oncology; and Dr Poulami Basu, Consultant Medical Oncologist.
Dr Das opened the discussion with a thought-provoking overview of the rising prevalence of breast cancer in India. He explained that unlike developed nations with strong screening systems, India faces challenges in early detection. He emphasised simple yet powerful preventive steps such as avoiding tobacco, exercising at least ten minutes a day, and adopting vaccines like HPV for cervical cancer prevention. He also reiterated the importance of mammography, self-examination, and genetic testing for BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations.
Dr Mandal elaborated on available treatments, including hormonal therapy, immunotherapy, and surgical interventions. He reassured students that stage 1 to 3 breast cancers are typically curable, while stage 4 cases can still be effectively managed to extend survival.
Dr Basu delivered a practical demonstration on detecting early warning signs and lumps. The session concluded with engaging student queries, followed by Dr Das expressing willingness to organise a vaccine drive on campus, ensuring that awareness transforms into action.
