An Enriching Journey through the Whisky Trails of Scotland

Nov 10, 2025

Leading a group of passionate IIHM students across the legendary whisky regions of Scotland has been an experience steeped in learning, discovery, and cultural immersion. This journey through the Highlands and the renowned Speyside region — the very heart of Scotch whisky — offered us an unparalleled understanding of craftsmanship, heritage, and the deep-rooted pride that defines Scotland’s iconic spirit.

Our visit to the Glenfiddich Distillery in Dufftown was particularly inspiring. Walking through the historic stone buildings of William Grant & Sons, surrounded by the scent of oak and barley, we witnessed how tradition and innovation coexist harmoniously. From observing the gleaming copper stills to understanding the importance of the River Fiddich’s pristine water in the cooling process, every detail reflected Scotland’s commitment to excellence. Students gained firsthand insight into the art and science of whisky-making — fermentation, distillation, maturation, and branding — all while appreciating how geography, climate, and time shape every dram’s unique character.

Yet, the essence of this experience extended far beyond whisky. The rolling hills of Speyside, the crisp Highland air, and the warmth of the Scottish people created an unforgettable backdrop for learning and reflection. Each day brought moments of camaraderie, shared meals, and laughter, turning this academic exploration into a journey of the heart. The cultural exchanges, local gastronomy, and sheer beauty of the countryside made every moment feel like a celebration of global hospitality and human connection.

As team leader, it was profoundly fulfilling to watch our students connect theory with experience — to see curiosity light up their faces as they discovered how passion and patience define a nation’s most cherished craft.

A heartfelt note of gratitude to our visionary leader, Dr. Suborno Bose, and to Mr. Ron Scott, whose guidance, planning, and passion for hospitality education made this enriching journey possible. Their belief in experiential learning continues to inspire us to think beyond classrooms and embrace the world as our greatest teacher.

Scotland welcomed us with open arms, warm hearts, and golden drams — leaving us with lessons that will linger long after we return home.
